BBC Radio 4 announces that Andrew Marr, Dominic West and the nation’s greatest poets and performers will be marking this year’s National Poetry Day by weaving poetry through the schedule on Thursday 8 October 2015. ‘If there is a single art which the people of these islands have excelled at, beyond all others, it is surely poetry’, says Marr. ‘Poetry is the British art’.
National Poetry Day and the #thinkofapoem challenge reached millions worldwide, caused some gleeful collateral damage (Matt Hancock MP) and prompted the US comic Ellen Degeneres, of all people, to tweet poetry at her 36 m followers. (America woke up to NPD just as we went to bed: the Day therefore defied the laws of space and time and lasted 36 hours…)
In the meantime, read this fine BookTrust blog by Philip Ardagh, who has this P G Wodehouse gem to share with us all: “When cares attack and life seems black/How sweet it is to pot a yak”
